Although fast food isn’t the best choice for our health, every now and then it can be helpful when you’re in need of a quick bite while on the go. Finding vegan and vegetarian options at fast food places can be very difficult, as animal-based products are used frequently. However, as the culture shifts to become more accepting of alternative, plant-based diets, more fast food restaurants have been experimenting with providing these options for their guests.
Here are the latest fast food chains to introduce vegan and vegetarian options in the East Texas area!
Burger King
Locations:
Longview, TX
Tyler, TX
Kilgore, TX
Marshall, TX
Many other locations
Burger King was one of the first fast food chains to offer a vegetarian option with their veggie burgers. Several years later, they introduced the Impossible Whopper, which was well-received compared to the old veggie burger. The Impossible Whopper can be easily customized to be vegan or vegetarian and is a convenient plant-based choice, available at many BK locations.
Additionally, they also have the Impossible King, which uses the same plant-based patty with different toppings and is served apart from a combo meal.
For vegans ordering the Impossible Whopper, request no mayo. Cheese does not come on this sandwich by default. When ordering the Impossible King, request no cheese.
Freddy’s Frozen Custard and Steakburgers
Locations:
Marshall, TX
Tyler, TX
Shreveport, LA
Many DFW locations
Although the name may sound like it wouldn’t be vegan or vegetarian friendly, believe it or not this place may have a suitable option for you!
Freddy’s veggie burger is a plant-based patty that tastes pretty good. Although it may not be the best veggie burger we have tried, we found it to be a great choice when trying to find a place to eat that everyone can agree on. Burgers, fries, shakes, and hotdogs…there is something at Freddy’s for everyone!
The veggie burger comes with American cheese and the house sauce by default, so for vegans you’ll want to request to swap out the sauce with either mustard, ketchup, or leave it off entirely. Unfortunately, they do not have a plant-based cheese, so for vegans you’ll also want to remove that as well.
The fries are also a safe choice.
For the pescatarians out there, we found that our particular location was also offering a fish sandwich – not sure if that is the norm or if it is a seasonal item for lent, but there’s that!
MOOYAH
Locations:
Texarkana, TX
Many DFW locations
MOOYAH is another burger chain that offers burgers, fries, shakes, salads, and more. During our recent trip to Texarkana, we were delightfully surprised to find that they also offered not just one, but FIVE veggie burgers!
The Vegan sandwich includes a black bean patty in a lettuce bun and comes with fresh avocado, sautéed mushrooms, grilled onions, tomato, and BBQ sauce. We opted for this one when we visited MOOYAH recently and we thought the patty was very delicious. Our only complaint was that we found the lettuce bun to be a bit too thick.
The Meatless Beast sandwich comes in a traditional bread bun with cheddar cheese, pepper jack cheese, fried onion rings, lettuce, tomato, MOOYAH sauce, ranch, and a black bean patty. Due to the sauce, ranch, and cheese this one is not vegan friendly but it is suitable for vegetarians.
The Avocado Ranch Black Bean Burger is another vegetarian option that includes fresh avocado, pepper jack, lettuce, tomato, ranch and a black bean patty all nestled inside a potato bun.
The Vegetarian sandwich is a classic offering featuring a black bean patty, fresh avocado, fried onion strings, lettuce, tomato, pickles, and MOOYAH sauce all on a potato bun.
…and then lastly, their fifth option allows you to build your own black bean burger using any of their 26 ingredient and condiment options.
